She let me read the first manuscript for Merehr. I had always read non-fiction or high-tech war novels (Tom Clancy, etc) but I was honored that she would trust me with her only copy. I read Merehr in 1993 and I have read it many times since. I have come to love Wing and Nien and the awe-inspiring story of Merehr. John Denver said "I know he'd be a poor man if he never saw an eagle fly". Well, I have seen an eagle fly, and while its beauty is hard to match, I'll take sitting around a campfire and listening to Shytei any day. Born in the Rocky Mountains of Utah, Shytei wrote her first story at age nine. A student and instructor of the martial arts, she is also a cyclist, skier and hiker. Though Merehr is her first published work, it was not her first (or last) book to be written. The last time I peeked inside her computer's desktop writing folder there were five novel-length works in progress as well as the beginnings for the other two books of the Merehr trilogy. Interestingly enough, a contemporary foray into the world of Coffee Shops was in there, as well as self-described "fledgling" ideas for two full-on fantasy novels. Apparently, she's been busy since the last time I did an update on her computer. —SPA
